About the Program
The Port Authority's Engineering & Architecture Associates Program will be your first step toward an exciting and rewarding career. As an incoming associate, you'll spend your first year at several different Port Authority facilities, completing a series of rotational work assignments on large and small-scale projects that involve different disciplines of engineering and architecture. The experience of working on a variety of projects will help you develop your professional credentials while giving you the opportunity to see "the big picture" of transportation infrastructure.

Who We Are and What We Do
The Engineering Department's mission is to provide professional engineering/architectural design and construction management services for all agency projects, while ensuring the continued safe and efficient operation of all Port Authority facilities. Our projects rely on a wide variety of technical expertise, and we're looking for talented, hardworking engineers and architects to bring those projects to life.
As a Port Authority engineer or architect, you'll be responsible for providing services in preparation of engineering studies, preliminary designs, final contract drawings, and construction projects.
Architects are involved in a wide array of specialties including urban planning, building design, site planning, landscape design, graphic design, and sustainable design. Applicants must have a Bachelor's of Architecture or a Master's of Architecture Degree.
Civil Engineers develop design solutions related to alignment, grading, drainage, and water and sanitary utilities for Port Authority roadways and airfields. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
Construction Management Engineers are responsible for ensuring that construction work is reviewed and performed in accordance with specifications and that the work performed meets the established standards. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management.
Electrical/Power Engineers design electrical installations including power, lighting, and fire alarm systems at all Port Authority facilities. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Electronics Engineers design electronic systems including CCTV, public address, and wireless communications systems for all Port Authority facilities. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Environmental Engineers conduct environmental assessments, site investigations, and compliance audits. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering.
Geotechnical Engineers conduct subsurface investigation of construction sites, model and design foundations and tunneling structures, prepare contracts, and provide technical support during construction. Applicants must have a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering.
Materials Engineers perform construction materials testing and conduct off-site inspections for conformance to contract specifications. They also investigate and develop new construction materials and modify the composition of construction materials currently being used to improve their performance. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with coursework in Materials Science.
Mechanical Engineers design plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, and central heating and refrigeration systems at Port Authority facilities. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Structural Engineers inspect and assess existing structures, as well as design new structures including buildings, roadways, bridges, and piers. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
Surveyors perform work associated with: creating digital maps based on Global Positioning Systems (GPS); boundary and control surveys that graphically describe the contours of the land; and construction surveys to establish horizontal and vertical positions. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Surveying Engineering Technology or an Associate's Degree with a concentration in Surveying.
Traffic Engineers are responsible for the design and operation of traffic signals, traffic control during construction phases, traffic planning studies, and traffic simulation modeling. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering.

Eligibility and Requirements
Students graduating with Bachelor's or Master's Degrees in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 are eligible to participate in the program. Architecture positions require a five-year degree; Geotechnical positions require a Masters Degree. Engineering & Architecture Associates are selected based on academic achievement, analytical and communication skills, and work experience. The selection process for the program is highly competitive and includes a pre-screen and panel interview.
