Because the Port of New York and New Jersey
may not be your cargo's final destination, we are working
to
create an extensive network of rail and barge services
at our
terminals
to efficiently facilitate the flow of international cargo
to points beyond our port. By reducing reliance on truck
trips,
our inland distribution network achieves an important environmental
objective: to ease traffic congestion on the regions
highways and lessen air emissions.
PIDN, a hub-and-spoke system, aims to lower inland distribution
costs, increase throughput capacity and spur economic development
at feeder ports and hinterlands by providing new port platforms
for value-added warehousing and distribution opportunities.
Essential PIDN partners include the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, prospective feeder port operators
and state and local government agencies. Other stakeholders
include ocean carriers and shippers who would use the
system,
the barge operators and local truckers, who will provide
service support, and regional consumers and residents.
Federal
programs, such as the Congestion Mitigation Air Quality
Improvement Program (CMAQ) and the Transportation Infrastructure
Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) are potential federal
sources for capital and operating funding.
Please be advised that the Albany ExpressBarge service
has been temporarily suspended.
